When to Travel

Many pregnant women find the second trimester is the most enjoyable time to Babymoon.  Your energy levels are usually higher and the risk of miscarriage is generally behind you, so you’re free to truly relax and enjoy yourself.

If you’re planning an overseas trip, check with your obstetrician or GP before you travel.

Before You Depart

If you’re planning to Babymoon overseas or within New Zealand, it’s essential to take out additional travel insurance that covers pregnancy-related complications.  Immunisations are recommended for some overseas destinations, so check that these are safe for you to have while pregnant, or if not, explore your alternatives.

Location

Getting off the beaten track can be lots of fun and, let’s face it, possibly a long time before you can go on another adventure.  However, it is recommended to pick safer holiday spots where possible.

Travel Light

You’re already carrying a baby, so lugging around excess luggage is the last thing you need for this reason.  It’s important to travel light and choose a bag that’s comfortable to carry.  Look for samples of your favourite products or buy travel sizes.

Choose Safe Activities

It's a good idea to avoid sports where these's a risk you may fall over or injure yourself, such as horse riding, skiing, surfing, water-skiing, paragliding or pressurised sports like scuba diving.  Stick to activities your body is familiar with.

Packing

A basic maternity tank is great for layering, easily worn under a tunic or kaftan, and leggings are a must.  A simple wrap dress can be dressed up or down – add flats and a tote during the day, or heels, clutch and sparkly earrings for an evening out.  Sarongs are also ideal if you’re heading for a sunny location.  They’re light, don’t need to be ironed and can be worn a number of ways.

Keep in mind that other countries will have their own ranges of maternity wear, so leave enough room in your bag for a shopping spree.

Food

It’s hard to know what’s safe to eat, especially in a foreign place.   Follow pregnancy safe food guides.

Skin Safety

Sun and heat could be your skin’s biggest enemies while on holidays.  Exposure to the sun will intensify any skin pigmentation you have.  Prevention is best.  If you’re heading outside cover up with clothing and hats at all times and apply sunscreen regularly.

Air travel

Sitting for long periods of time can cause swelling in your feet and ankles.  Support socks area available from chemists to avoid deep vein thrombosis (DVT or blood clots) – the risk of which may increase while you are pregnant.  Requesting an aisle seat when you book can make life easier on board, as you won’t have to climb over fallow passengers to take inevitable frequent toilet breaks.  Keep well hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the flight.

Relax

Most importantly, a Babymoon is a time to recoup and relax.  So charge up the batteries and take some time out for yourself and with your partner before the arrival of your little one and this new stage of your life.
